A bit of history

The first search engines are Wandex and Excite. Excite was created in 1993 by Stanford students. This search engine still exists today. At the same time, Wandex appeared, created by a student from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Then there is another search engine – Aliweb. In the early 90s, search engines appeared one after another: JumpStation, World Wide Web Worm, Alta Vista, Infoseek, Lycos, Yahoo, Ask.com, and finally, in 1997, Google and Yandex.

The first search engines were genetic. The main parameter for assessing the site was the text and content in the words used. The more keywords on the page, the more relevant it was considered. With the advent of the PageRank algorithm from Google, sites began to be evaluated by authority, which was calculated based on the link profile of the resource. The more external links a site had, the higher it was in Google search results. In a similar way, the reliability of determining the authenticity in Yandex was determined by the TIC (in 2018 it was replaced by the IKS).

It was easy for SEOs to manipulate the SERPs in their queries, so soon search engines didn’t return what users wanted to see. Search engines were losing their relevance due to the fact that the struggle began with the first methods of SEO, which returned to the backlink ranking waves until 2012. Over the years, Yandex and Google have been creating new and updating old algorithms. Search engines have learned to index not only texts, but also meta descriptions, images, determine the quality of links, regionality, etc. Assessor ratings have appeared – now not only robots, but also people are looking for page relevance.
